This past Saturday just before the snowy weather hit northwest Connecticut (again), the kids and I visited the Village Center for the Arts in New Milford. When we stepped inside we knew this was a place for creativity. Children wearing their art smocks were painting on ceramic cups and canvases and in the back there was a large party where an entire group was creating artistic magic.
We found that the Open Studio had a very simple premise. For ten dollars plus supplies, artists can create art for as long as they wanted at the studio. There are other rates if a child is being dropped off by a parent (no cost for a parent staying to assist the child) or if they are planning on creating with clay. My son wanted to create a monster out of cardboard boxes. My daughter wanted to paint on a canvas. We were certainly at the right place! They put on their smocks and set about collecting the tools for their creations.
Throughout the artistic endeavor the team was extremely helpful in explaining where supplies were located, the process of how to create the art (my daughter received recommendations on the methodology of painting. With expert assistance, they were able to create their respective projects. They certainly had a fun time doing it!
I highly recommend the Open Studio time at Village Center for the Arts. We most certainly will be back and, when we’re ready, we may take a crack at creating pottery!
